(5 Day's of the K's) Style Icon: Kim Kardashian

Pencil skirts, tonal colors and leather galore.

Kim Kardashian is a lighthouse of hope to anyone stuck between an awkward stage and a doesn't-yet-know-their-style-phase. Maybe it was the boyfriend/husband or maybe it was a baby, but in the past three years (here's looking at you Kanye?) Kim has gone from more is more to less is best. Extensions? Gone. Ultra-bold eyelashes? Gone. Artificial Cabo tan? Gone-ish. Now, she oozes a feminine, edgy-modern look that we all can appreciate and envy.

The best part about her style evolution is that she proved curvy figures can look equally as chic in a pencil skirt, turtleneck, or nude latex dress as those 'blessed' with waify statures and six foot long giraffe legs. Where many state that designers and brands only create pieces for runway-ready anomalies, Kim's (and Kanye's) style shows otherwise.

1) A red lip makes a bold statement, but a nude lip sets the tone.

2) Mobility is overrated, a hip-hugging calf-length pencil skirt is not.

3) A mid-pony says laundry day but a high, sleek pony says Met Gala.

4) Mom's can wear crop tops, too. Don't go too far, a little sliver with suffice.

5) If you're not walking far, the higher the heel the better the heel (even with a little North on your hip)

6) You don't have to keep your pajamas exclusive to the boudoir. Wearing them outside can prove to be sexy and alluring. And of course, ultra feminine.

7) Sunglasses = futuristic & oversized cat-eye

8) You're going to need a nude bodycon dress, by like, yesterday.

9) OUTERWEAR: Army jackets, (faux) leather, longline blazers, kimonos.

10) If you don't feel like straightening your hair, pigtail braids, a messy bun or subtle waves will do.

11) Well fitted denim (not too tight and not too loose) is always a staple to keep updating.

12) Try a choker. It's in, it's fun, it limits breathing but only slightly. No biggie.

Thoughts? Opinions? Have you been thoroughly convinced to wear a tight dress this Friday? Do you suddenly want a matte foundation?

15 Style Lessons To Learn From Carrie Bradshaw

If there is one television character that taught us about style, it's Carrie Bradshaw. Not only do we relate to her in terms of chasing personal style but as a writer, a New Yorker (whether you live there or not) a lovestruck woman or just as a lady trying to navigate her life and buy as many shoes as possible even if that means being a few days late on rent. The quote When I first moved to New York and I was totally broke, sometimes I bought Vogue instead of dinner. I found it fed me more.” has resonated with more fashion obsessed girls than The Devil Wears Prada and Breakfast at Tiffany's scenes combined. In honor of my rewatching the show from the beginning for the seventeenth time, I bring you the rules of Carrie Bradshaw's style, starting with the obvious. There aren't any that cannot be broken.

1. There are no rules.

2. Don't be afraid to mismatch prints. And by "not afraid" I don't mean stripes and polka dots. I mean PRINTS. Any prints. Besides, stripes and dots are now considered a neutral in their own right.

3. Bring on the menswear. You can still look like a lady in a vest, blazer or trousers.

4.  Heels over everything. At the expense of your feet, of course.
5. Don't shy away from volume. Big fur coats (watch out for PETA) oversized beach hats, baby doll lace tanks and pleated or tulle skirts are all winners here.

6.  If you like it then you should put a belt on it.

7. The more embellishments the better.

8. Color is most important.

9. Think corsages are only for Prom? Think again.

10. Remember when we discussed 'less is more' with French Girl style? That's not the case here. More is more is more is more.

11. A feminine, flirty dress goes a long way.

12. Going to a party? Hello! Sequins.

13. You better own a tutu. You know, just in case.

14. Always have an evening dress in your closet. You never know when you'll be invited to a rooftop party, late night event or a spontaneous trip to Paris. Carrie was always prepared.

15. Be yourself, unapologetically. Last but not least. Style isn't personal unless it's true to you, what you do and what you love. If it's not personal, it's trendy. There's a huge difference.

Style Icon: Solange Knowles

Solange knowles style

Beyonce may have the voice but her sister Solange has all the style. Making waves with her quirky, covetable looks, the actress/DJ/mother/aunt is not one to shy away from making major fashion statements. Eye-catching colors, big hair and bold prints are all blended together to create an effortless combination of cool girl and traveler.

As I researched her more and more these past few weeks, I couldn't believe what I had been missing. Her personal style is the physical manifestation of the basic idea I created my blog to portray and advocate. Wearing whatever the hell you want. She's pushed prints to work with one another (and they do, surprisingly and gladly) and although the audience snapping shots of her may not always pick up what she's putting down, she doesn't seem to mind. She dresses for herself and that requires an immense amount of bravery among keyboard clad bullies and Best Dressed competitions in our favorite publications.

So how can we emulate such an icon?
I'm SO glad you asked!

  1. Don't be afraid of color: Brights with neutrals, white on white or monochrome pink. Try to pair colors that you haven't before -- purple with yellow, hot pink with orange.
  2. Wear a ton of patterns. And mix them: What fun is a print when not meshed with another? None at all. Make sure to keep one color cohesive within the scheme. Plaids & florals are a yes.
  3. Pants are optional: Shorts, skirts, and dresses are not.
  4. Vary heels and flats: Gone are the days of sky-high heels every time you leave the house. Have fun with strappy sandals, striped ballet flats, chunky wedges and pointed kitten heels.
  5. Choose statement jewelry & Accessories: standout clutches in varying shapes, scarf tied wrists and large sunglasses will suffice.

Bold & Bright

"Shoes! I’m all about the shoes! I order a ton of them online and play with my entire wardrobe until I find the right shoe."

  • Wear Your natural hair: What you were given probably looks better than what youre forcing it to have. Im personally about to take up the no straightening lifestyle.
  • Play with shapes: Oversized sweaters, billowing sleeves and sculptual blouses.
  • When in doubt, try menswear: You know what that means. Blazers and trousers.
